Checking the odometer is the easiest way to determine if it’s time for an oil change. The exact interval between oil changes depends on the type of oil you’re using in the engine.

If your car is older, it’s likely that it runs on conventional oil. The recommended interval in this case is 5,000 to 7,500 miles. The synthetic oil that you’ll find flowing through the engines of newer vehicles can travel a lot farther before a change is necessary. This range is 7,500 to 15,000 miles.

The Oil Warning Light Is On

There are two reasons you might see an illuminated oil warning light. One is that the oil level is too high and the other is that it’s too low. Be sure to have the issue checked out to prevent engine damage.

The Check Engine Light Is On

The check engine light is a sure indication that there’s something going on with the engine. While it’s not exclusive to oil issues, it’s important that you take your vehicle to a service center as soon as you notice that this light has been activated.

Odd Car Sounds

Let’s say you’re driving along and you suddenly notice unusual banging, knocking, or clicking noises coming from the engine. You might also note that the engine is running louder than usual. All of these are symptoms of an engine that’s running low on oil. Again, have the situation inspected right away.

The Oil Looks Unhealthy

It’s a good idea to periodically examine the oil to make sure the level is where it needs to be as well as checking its appearance. When it is healthy, oil takes on a hue that’s similar to that of amber or honey. The color of oil that’s due to be switched out can cover a range that goes from dark brown to black. You should see a technician immediately, if you notice that there are particles in the oil.
